Adkins was raised by a single mother in several working-class communities of London. As a young girl she was a fan of modern pop music and learning to play the guitar as well as the clarinet. However, it wasn't until her teens, when she was introduced to rhythm-and-blues singer Etta James and other mid-20th century artists, that she began to think about a career in music.
